After the end of modern family, ABC almost launched a spin-off – but apparently the network got cold feet before a pilot was even created. That’s according to series star Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who revealed the few TV trivia about Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen this week. Talking about his decade on the hit sitcom, Ferguson revealed some of the elements he took on set, talked about the cast’s current level of communication (like all major casts, they have a thread of quite active text messages, apparently).
The spin-off would have centered Mitchel and Cam, their daughter Lily and their new baby, as they begin a new chapter of their lives in Missouri, where they relocated after Cam accepted a college football coaching job. during the show’s final season. Some fans had assumed this was coming, given that the spinoff was somewhat telegraphed during the finale.
“There were discussions,” Ferguson told Cohen. “I think the network decided not to. This is the first time I’ve said that.”
You can see the clip below.
Ferguson said he’s not sure why the spinoff didn’t move forward, other than that the network may have felt like it was time for a break.
“I think they’re just wondering if this is the right family to tell this story,” Ferguson explained. “I think they were – you know, we had been together for 11 years and I think they were ready to go in a different direction.”
Don’t be too surprised if there is a how i met your fatherstyle fallout that comes after a short hiatus, then.
