CBS Picks 3 Drama Pilots For Series, Passes Comedy Pilots – Deadline

CBS has given series orders to three of its five drama pilots, Max Thieriot’s land of fire (fka Cal Fire); Eastern New York, headlined by Amanda Warren and Jimmy Smits; and So help me Todd (fka Untitled Mother & Son Legal Drama), starring Marcia Gay Harden and Skylar Astin. CBS doesn’t comment beyond that, but I hear all three series are for the fall.

true lies, ordered as an off-cycle pilot, had also been rumored for a series order, likely for mid-season. I hear the negotiations between CBS and 20th Television continue, and the project is still very much alive.

CBS’ remaining drama pilot is not moving forward, First edition, a reimagining of the Kyle Chandler series that had gone cold, plus all of the CBS comedy pilots/presentations. The network this year opted for all comedy project pitch orders to its own studio, CBS Studios (The Cuddle Machine, Dark Companion, Unexpected in Akron), while the only comedy from an outside studio, Warner Bros. Rust Bell News, was a pilot in his own right.

New Series on Broadcast Networks in 2022-23: Photo Gallery

I hear the CBS brass were very pleased with their crop of drama pilots this season, considered one of the strongest in years, while the comedy pilot group produced zero stars.

With CBS also canceling three ongoing comedy series – United States of Al, B Positive and How do we ride – the network will have the fewest half-hour series on the schedule in some time. Five years ago, CBS cut its Monday comedy block from two hours to one hour, most recently consisting of The neighborhood and Bob Hearts Abishola. CBS can now do the same with the Thursday two-hour block.

I hear So help me Toddwhich has comedic overtones, could join the lineup behind the 8 p.m. comedy block, anchored by the flagship Young Sheldon and eventually with resounding success Ghosts.

CBS 2022 Pilot Orders and Series

So help me Todd was one of the Cinderella stories of the 2022 broadcast season. Taking a big hit early on when the female lead was recast, with Marcia Gay Harden replacing Geena Davis opposite Skylar Astin, the pilot clung to the middle of the pack and had a great finish with strong test results I hear.
