DC Rumor Points to Another Golden Age Batman Villain in HBO Max’s Penguin Series

According to a rumor shared on 4chan, the next penguin The series is looking to cast for a role described as “an actor who was driven mad when he heard he couldn’t perform in a play due to his deformed face.” Although this rumor is unconfirmed, it is consistent with information teased in March by Bill “Jett” Ramey of Batman in the movieswhich hinted at a future appearance of the original Clayface, who first appeared during the Golden Age of Batman comics.

Created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, Basil Karlo got his start in Detective comics #40 in 1940 as an actor gone mad after discovering that The Terror, a horror film he had starred in, was being remade. Karlo adopted the persona of “Clayface”, the film’s villain, and went on a killing spree targeting the remake’s cast and crew before being caught by Batman and Robin.

HBO Max’s spin-off series Penguin received a series order earlier in March and will see Colin Farrell reprise his The Batman role of Oswald Copplebot / the Penguin. The Batman director Matt Reeves will return as producer along with Dylan Clark and Agents of SHIELD. Writer and producer Lauren LeFranc will serve as showrunner and writer for the limited series. “Colin exploded off the screen as the Penguin in The Batmanand having the chance to explore this character’s inner life in depth on HBO Max is an absolute delight,” Reeves said of the series.

Directed and co-written by Reeves, The Batman stars Pattinson as Bruce Wayne / Batman, Kravitz as Selina Kyle / Catwoman, Paul Dano as Edward Nashton / Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as Lieutenant James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth and Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot / Penguin. The Batman was described by Reeves and Pattinson as a neo-noir crime thriller. In particular, the film follows a young Bruce Wayne who is only in his second year of vigilance and who will rely heavily on the character’s detective abilities.

Premiere at the beginning of March, The Batman exceeded box office expectations in its opening weekend, grossing a total of $134 million after projections estimated it would open to $128.5 million domestically. The film also earned $21.6 million from its previews, a number that includes showings on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights. Although a strong box office, The Batman didn’t break – or set – any records with those earnings compared to other DC films. Globally, The Batman grossed $751.1 million at the worldwide box office, including $395.05 million from domestic ticket sales.


The Batman is now on HBO Max and hits digital, 4K UHD and DVD on May 24.
