God of War iis full of memorable moments, though one of the most exciting comes at the end of the game and served as a teaser for what’s coming in the sequel. Clearly inspired by this moment, an artist and god of war fan named Mark Scicluna created a spectacular cartoon cover for the game.
That moment, Thor sees Arriving at the home of Kratos and Atreus, waving his hammer Mjolnir and preparing to fight as a storm gathers over the characters. An iconic image that has made fans talk for years, and many have been excited to see what the match between Kratos and Thor will look like, and wonder if it might top the former’s matches with Baldur. With God of War: Ragnarok release this year, fans will soon have their answer. For now, however, they can appreciate this work of art from Scicluna.
With the artist as a former illustrator for Rockstar Games, it makes sense that they would be incredibly talented. There are plenty of cool details to appreciate in their latest work, the most obvious of which is the re-creation of the scene where Thor first shows up. Kratos, Atreus and Mjolnir all translate well to the vintage cartoon style, where the angle of the scene is recreated perfectly. The choice of a vibrant blue for the sky and yellow for Thor’s lightning makes the piece even more eye-catching.
However, while a cartoon-inspired version of god of warthe ending would be cool in itself, what makes the work spectacular is the artist’s eye for detail. They go beyond that when it comes to making art feel like an old school comic book front, as the text boxes with “Thor’s Mighty Hammer” and “Everything in Full Color” add a lot to the play. The title “Ragnarok is coming” is an excellent choice, while seeing the faces of Kratos and Atreus in the upper left corner should immediately feel familiar to comic book collectors.
With a price of 25 cents and an incredibly stylish god of war logo boats present on the piece, there is a lot for fans of the franchise to appreciate. Not surprisingly, there has been plenty of praise for this fan art on both Twitter and Reddit, with thousands of likes and upvotes accompanied by supportive comments praising the artist’s style. Perhaps the coolest comment of all came from Santa Monica itself, when the official Twitter account for the studio responded to applaud Scicluna.
Although early on there was some division around Thor’s design, it will be interesting to see how players feel when they see the character in action. Given how much build-up there was in the original game for Thor’s appearance, his cruelty is likely to make him a significant challenge for Kratos.
