It’s official: Law and order returns for season 22.
NBC’s revival starring Sam Waterston’s Jack McCoy has been renewed for another season, TVLine has learned. Law and order: organized crime was also renewed for a third season; Law and Order: SVU has already won another season (his 24th) as part of a huge Three– renewal of the season in February 2020.
“The emblematic Law and order The brand has long been synonymous with NBC, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to bring these three dramas back for the 2022-23 season,” NBC President of Scripted Programming Lisa Katz said in a statement. “It’s a testament to the brilliance of Dick Wolf’s storytelling that audiences remain captivated by these unforgettable characters week after week, year after year.”
the original Law and order debuted in 1990 and ran for 20 seasons before being abruptly canceled in 2010. But it returned for Season 21 in February, resulting in a spinoff. SVU and Organized crime on NBC’s Thursday night lineup.
So far this season, Law and order averages 6.1 million weekly viewers and a demo rating of 0.6 (with live DVR playback + 7), attracting a larger crowd than the timeslot predecessor The black list on average through January (5.1 mil/0.6). Of the 14 dramas NBC has aired this TV season, it ranks No. 8 in both measures.
In addition to Waterston, the revival stars Anthony Anderson (blackish) resuming his role as Det. Kevin Bernard. New faces include Hugh Dancy (Hannibal, The Way) as Senior Assistant to District Attorney Nathan Price, Jeffrey Donovan (Burn Notice) as Det. Frank Cosgrove, Oldelya Halevi (good problem) as ADA Samantha Maroun and Camryn Manheim (The practice) as Lt. Kate Dixon.
Showrunner Rick Eid previously explained his plans to do more with the series pending a renewal. “I’m excited for next season,” he told TVLine. “I think next year we’ll have the opportunity to dig even deeper into the characters, which really excites me.”
As for Law and order cameos, Carey Lowell returned as District Attorney Jamie Ross in the season premiere, and SVUMariska Hargitay of is set to appear as captain Olivia Benson in the finale, which airs Thursday, May 19 at 8/7c.
Eid, who previously served as showrunner for SVU, Chicago PD and FBI, hinted at additional cameos in Season 22, saying, “I’m sure next year you’ll see some.”
