Nixa Mo. (KY3) – Nixa’s school board will address three books at the school board meeting on May 12, after some parents expressed concern and filed appeals to the district to remove them from the shelves.
In accordance with the school board’s agenda, the following books have been sent for reconsideration under the board policy KLB (Reconsideration of materials).
- Return by Yaa Gyasi
- Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic by Alison Bechdel
- Not all boys are blue by George M. Johnson
“The material has been through the assessment committee process, and a recommendation has been made from each assessment committee, the results of which have been submitted to the complainant,” the school board’s agenda states. “In each of the following three cases, the complainant was not satisfied with the committee’s recommendation and as such has submitted a written complaint to Nixa’s school board for a final decision.”
The Nixa School District received 17 formal reconsideration requests for 16 unique individual titles. There were two that were submitted on the same title. Parents have brought their concerns to Facebook groups, saying the titles have an inappropriate sexual character. There are many conflicting views on whether the books should stay or go throughout the Nixa community.
“I think it’s really important for us not to censor the books that our children have the opportunity to have,” said Karen Perry, Nixa’s parent. “I do not think one parent’s opinion should be higher than that of other parents.”
“This is the first time in my tenure here and in 16 years that the board has that it has received an appeal to the board,” said David Liss of the Nixa schools. “The board will decide and really set a direction for what is considered appropriate with our books.”
