A video taken by a park-goer shows the terrifying moment when a 10-meter-high (about 32 feet) water slide collapsed, causing several people to plunge to the ground.
In a 17-second clip of the incident, which was… shared on Facebook by Indonesian social media outlet Noodou, parts of the water slide could fall to the ground, accompanied by a torrent of water. Several victims scream as they fall to the ground, as a crowd of people rush to help.
The incident took place on May 7 at Kenjeran Park in Surabaya, Indonesia.
It was initially reported that nine people had fallen from the slide when it collapsed, including a child who suffered a head injury; however, later reports revealed that 16 people, mostly children, had suffered injuries and at least three had broken bones. No fatalities have been reported.
While Indonesian media reported that the collapse may have been the result of extended use of the slide, a park spokesperson later contradicted this speculation by stating that the ride had been regularly serviced and planned maintenance had been carried out nine months before the incident. He thinks the slide, with a maximum capacity of 5-10 people, was overloaded.
The incident is currently under investigation and the amusement park was closed the following day. Surabaya Mayor Eri Cahyadi said park management would be held responsible for the accident and the victims’ medical compensation.
“The Surabaya City Government will provide all victims with trauma healing services to be carried out by the offices,” Cahyadi stated per Daily star† “They are being supervised until full recovery.”
Surabaya Deputy Mayor Armuji also requested that all other amusement parks in East Java’s capital be inspected immediately to prevent similar accidents in the future.
